NHS Doctor and TV Star
Tamal Ray is an NHS doctor working as an anaesthetist in Manchester. His first brush with the public eye was as a finalist in the 2015 series of The Great British Bake Off. Over 10 stressful weeks of baking his affable nature and self-deprecating wit saw him become a firm favourite with the audience.
Tamal’s interest in food started as a young child when he would spend his Summer holidays looking through his mum’s collection of cookbooks and baking with his older sister. After agreeing to make his sister’s wedding cake in 2007, his culinary creations became ever more ambitious. He now writes a monthly food column for The Guardian.
As well as his creative talents, Tamal has always had a passion for science. Originally from Hertfordshire, he studied for his medical degree at King’s College London before embarking on a training program in anaesthetics. He now works in Manchester in a challenging setting, helping to care for the sick.
Last year, Tamal was back on our screens as a presenter on Channel 4’s new health program, Be Your Own Doctor which he co-presented with Kate Quilton. He is currently filming a new series which will air later this year.
